Senior Life Science Underwriter

Location: Manchester, Lancashire, United Kingdom

Salary: £90,000

Job Overview

The primary purpose of this role is the management and leadership of the Life Science team. You will set the vision, build and support the team's day-to-day needs, and support the development of underwriters. Reporting to the Head of Underwriting, you will collaborate with key stakeholders, including Life Science practice leaders, product leaders, and UK regional leaders.

The role involves underwriting complex existing Life Science business, including Employers Liability, Public Liability, Products & Services Liability, Property, Clinical Trials, Errors and Omissions, and Cyber insurance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, grow, and service existing client accounts while executing financial plans and growth strategies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with brokers, ensuring regular engagement and market research.
  • Act as a technical specialist in Life Science underwriting, representing the company externally as an industry expert.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as Branch Development Managers, Product Leaders, Claims, and Loss Control teams.
  • Execute renewal plans, drive best practices, and improve operational efficiency.
  • Lead and support innovation in product development and underwriting strategies.
  • Ensure accurate risk reporting and compliance with underwriting authority.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, supporting the development and coaching of junior team members.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Underwriting background with high levels of underwriting authority in at least one core line of business.
  • Ability to work independently within delegated underwriting authority.
  • Strong expertise in risk analysis, claims interpretation, and loss control deployment.
  • Experience underwriting and servicing multinational clients with knowledge of compliance requirements.
  • Excellent negotiation skills and broker relationship management experience.
  • Proven ability to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other teams.
  • Experience in the Life Science sector is preferred but not required.
  • ACII qualification (or working towards) preferred but not essential.
