Job Description

We are seeking an Underwriter for the Middle Market team in our Birmingham office. The Middle Market proposition offers comprehensive multi-line capabilities targeted at select industry verticals such as real estate, hospitality, financial institutions, professional services, technology, education and life science. We work through a network of retail brokers who share our commitment to long-term partnerships built on a strong service proposition.

The role involves building a profitable book of business within the overall European business plan parameters, working with key broker partners in the UK.

Main Responsibilities

• Prioritise and evaluate new and renewal submissions to identify profitable opportunities.
• Price and analyse coverage, structure and exposures on individual risks.
• Set appropriate terms and conditions per underwriting strategy and guidelines to quote qualified risks.
• Attend client and broker meetings, networking events and social engagements as applicable.
• Exercise underwriting pricing discipline to meet profitability goals, ensuring compliance with guidelines and procedures.
• Develop and expand the existing portfolio by strengthening relationships with current clients and engaging new prospects.
• Maintain a strong customer focus while balancing risk mitigation and compliance.
• Conduct individual account underwriting audits as needed.
• Prepare underwriting referral applications for risks beyond authority limits for higher-level approval.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• Cross-class underwriting experience within the middle market sector.
• Undergraduate degree, insurance qualification or advanced degree preferred.
• Minimum of 3+ years of property and casualty (P&C) underwriting experience.
• Proven experience in the middle market insurance sector.
• Established relationships with retail producers.
• Strong negotiation skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
